Capturing Screenshots in Windows

Screenshots provide visual representations of detailed steps. Following the steps below will help users capture screenshots in older versions of Microsoft Windows using built-in programs.
Another option is to purchase a dedicated screen capture program such as SnagIt from TechSmith (R).

Older Windows Versions

Determine the desired results.

Capturing entire screens
Proceed to next step.
Capturing portions of a screen, such as a specific action
Proceed to Step 3.

Press Ctrl+PrintSc.
Note
This method captures everything on all screens. Users with more than one monitor should use a different process.

When capturing a portion of a screen, click the Start button and then navigate to Windows Accessories>Snipping Tool.

Click the Snipping Tool and then select New Snip.

Use the mouse cursor to draw a rectangle around the image.

Click Edit and then select Copy.

Paste the image into the document using Ctrl+V.

Determine if using Windows 10.

Proceed to Windows 10.
Not using Windows 10

Windows 10 Only

Windows 10 users can use the Windows+S key combination to capture screen images and then use Ctrl+V to paste them into a new document.

A crosshair cursor appears and the screen behind it is faded
The Win+S function is already loaded. The Windows 10 process is complete.

Press Windows+X and then select the Command Prompt option. (Alternate method: right click the Windows button and then select Command Prompt.)

Input the following script: “reg.exe add HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced /v DisabledHotkeys /t REG_SZ /d S /f”
Note
Do not input the quotes. This process is done once.

Press Enter to see confirmation.

Log off the network or stand-alone computer and then log on again.

Open OneNote or any Microsoft Office program.

Select Paste to Clipboard and then select use always.

Hold the Windows key and press S and then draw a rectangle around the area to copy.

Press Ctrl+V to paste the screenshot.
